SORT
Items that are undoubtedly unnecessary should be thrown away. Red Tags make it possible to make selection a continuous step, i.e. to quickly remove all items whose usefulness is questionable.
SET IN ORDER
Organising and designating places for all items that remained after SORT, in accordance with the principle of "a place for everything and everything in its place"
SHINE
Keeping work stations clean. This requires defining what should be cleaned, how, when and who should do it. The organisation must also provide appropriate tools and resources for cleaning, which should be stored in designated places.
STANDARDISE
Development and implementation of standards for the first three steps. 4S introduces standards for colours and markings used, instructions, diagrams, schedules, checklists, maps of work areas, 5S boards, etc.
SUSTAIN
Maintaining the introduced improvements at work stations. The basic activities of this step are: constant promotion of 5S in the organisation, communication of results and employee training.
